More than 2000 persons have been participating in the "Millet Ski Touring Courchevel" every Wednesday evening. Kilian Jornet and Laetitia Roux, World Ski Mountaineering champions, regularly participate in this competition and improve their own record.
In 2012, Courchevel was the first French ski resort to create a groomed and secured route of 3,2 km and a vertical drop of 500 meters. During the ascent, the uphillers can see signs indicating the distance they have to hike to reach the finish line. In 2014, Courchevel kept developing this discipline by creating the first KV (Vertical Kilometer) - 1000 meters of Vertical Drop and a distance of 5km, secured and groomed.
This Vertical Kilometer route is highlighted by the association "Courchevel Sports Alpinisme" since the 2014/2015 winter. This association provides to uphillers and trailers with a unique concept: they can compare their winter and summer performances on the same route: the "Plum KV Courchevel".
Thanks to the work and the motivation of numerous volunteers who help with the organization of those events, Courchevel has been certified by the FFME (French Federation of Mountains and Climbing), to host The French Ski Mountaineering Championship in 2012 and 2013, as well as 2 competitions of the Ski Mountaineering World Cup in 2014.
Those 2 routes are opened every day during the opening of the ski lifts. In order to ensure uphillers’ safety and the maintenance of the route, it is strictly forbidden to ski down on those routes or to hike on those itineraries.
